Dedicated to Robert Arnold.
Who is gone but not forgotten

Robert and Shane

Robert Arnold died September 8, 2000 from cancer. He was buried with his Caring Canines Therapy Dog shirt neatly folded in his casket. His certificate of appreciation from the Barlow Vincent Safety town and the picture of his beloved sheltie Shane were also tucked in beside him. We will miss him but he will be with us in each smile that we continue to bring to those who look into our dog's eyes and see the heart in our visits.

Robert was part of our Caring Canines Therapy Dog Team during the last half of the 1990's and into 2000. Whether at a nursing home visit to brighten the day of shut in residents or at Saftey town camps to teach children how to be safe around dogs, Robert was a valued member of our Caring Canines.

His sheltie Shane was a gentle soul who would gladly let folks stroke his fur. Robert would point his finger at Shane, tell him, "Go to bed.", and Shane would obediently roll over and close his eyes as if to go to sleep. Shane earned his AKC companion dog title and was working on Companion Dog Excellent skills. Robert had hoped that they would be involved in training toward AKC Agility titles and helped with some of the needed equipment for the area 4-H dog club. Shane was best known as Robert's companion to his friends and family. Shane routinely accompanied Robert and his wife Sandra to work at their business, The Goldmark Party House. Robert was heart broken when Shane died suddenly as Robert was fighting his battle with cancer.

Robert enjoyed using his dogs in therapy dog activities. Robert began training his young pup, Yoshee to accept attention and to be part of our Caring Canines. She accompanied him to a Safety town in June. Robert was proud of her skills with the kids at the camp and was making plans for future visits.

And so as I watched the multitude of colorful balloons cascade from the back of the van towards the heavens in the final moments of Robert's burial service, I couldn't help but smile as I chose to remember him as a friend who thought that it was important to give someone the gift of a warm fuzzy from a dog.
